When the Steps Feel Too Much: A Reflection on Unhelpful Limits

A message from CCNI President, Brian Bennett

We have an 85lb Goldendoodle named Hudson who fills our home with sweetness. But here’s the quirky thing—he will not go up to the second floor or down into the basement. Even though he’ll tackle stairs outside or in other places, something about our home’s stairs stops him. He’ll stand on the first step, paw lifted, sometimes even whining—longing to be in the middle of the action, but convinced he can’t do it.

And it hit me—how often do we do the same?

How many times do we stand at the first step, not moving forward—not because we physically can’t, but because we’ve convinced ourselves we can’t? So often, our limits live more in our minds than in our circumstances.

By God’s grace and power, so much more is possible than we believe.

Unhelpful limit living can look like:

  • Staying behind the screen to keep learning instead of stepping into connection with real clients
  • Making excuses that delay launching that offer, starting that podcast, or writing that book
  • Avoiding the discomfort of networking and putting ourselves out there
  • Playing it safe and small, in ways that dishonor the gift of our calling and stir quiet regret

What does unhelpful limit living look like for you?

Proverbs 3:5 reminds us, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart…”
God writes the best stories—not always the ones we expect, not always dramatic or loud, and never someone else’s story—but they are good.

The song Oceans (Where Feet May Fail) really encourages and speaks to my spirit.

“You call me out upon the waters, the great unknown where feet may fail…
Your grace abounds in deepest waters, Your sovereign hand will be my guide.”

The journey of becoming a coach, and building a practice that blesses others, will stretch you. And yet, the stretching is sacred.

God does some of His best work in the stretch—removing mental blinders, breaking off unhelpful limits, and inviting us to live beyond the steps we thought we couldn’t climb.

Thank you for choosing faith over fear and courage over comfort. There are clients waiting for the blessing of you showing up fully as the coach God is shaping you to be. And as you do, you’ll discover more of who He is—and more of who you are.

Reflection Questions:

  1. What “first step” are you hesitating on in your coaching journey?
  2. What mindset limit might God be inviting you to release?
  3. Where is He stretching you so He can grow you into more of your calling?

Let’s keep saying yes to the stairs, to the stretch, and to the sovereign hand that guides us into deeper waters.
