Christian Coaching – Getting Help From the Holy Spirit, part 3

by R.A. Weigel

God gave Christians, the followers of Christ, the gift of the Holy Spirit for a reason. It’s for your benefit – to advantage your life with a helper, advocate, counselor, intercessor, and Paraclete. It’s good to remember that there is nothing that God has ever done for you as a Christian coach, that was not for your benefit.

John 16:7 (NKJV) – Nevertheless I tell you the truth. It is to your advantage that I go away; for if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you; but if I depart, I will send Him to you.

The first perspective was the Holy Spirit speaking to you with…

A Thought Faster Than Your Own Thoughts.”

The second perspective was the Holy Spirit speaking to you when you…

“Prepare to Listen, Consider It, and Write It Down Now!”

The third perspective is:

3. Read The Bible Regularly To Know The Language of the Holy Spirit.

1 Corinthians 2:1-12 (NLT) – But it was to us that God revealed these things by his Spirit. For his Spirit searches out everything and shows us God’s deep secrets. No one can know a person’s thoughts except that person’s own spirit, and no one can know God’s thoughts except God’s own Spirit. And we have received God’s Spirit, (not the world’s spirit), so we can know the wonderful things God has freely given us.

What is your relationship with the Lord?

Are you spending time with the Lord? Are you seeking His company every day? Or are you calling on the Lord only when you have a problem? A strong relationship is built on trust and companionship and the Lord God wants both from you. That begins by reading the Bible regularly and learning the language of the Holy Spirit. In reality, you’ll never know the voice of the Holy Spirit to help you with your life and coaching if you don’t read the Bible.

God has revealed Himself through His Word. The Word of God is the will of God. Therefore, you’ve got to make the Word of God something that you’re consistently installing into the personal hard drive of your mind if you want the advantage of the Holy Spirit’s guidance. You should make the decision that you WANT to know God’s Word and you WANT guidance from the Holy Spirit and that begins by reading the Bible, memorizing scripture, and using scripture. Then, as you coach, you’ll have a much greater impact from input that the Holy Spirit wants to give you.

To become a better coach, you should want to build the language of the Holy Spirit in your mind, so you’ll know what you’re hearing from the Holy Spirit when you’re in the midst of the coaching conversation.

Light Versus Dark

You’ve heard the phrase “light dispels darkness.” Well, it’s true and you’ve lived enough life to realize that when you shine a light, the darkness cannot overcome that light. No matter how dark it can become, a single light changes everything. Consider that when you’re coaching because when you decide to shine the light of God’s Word as you work with others, the darkness has to leave. What darkness? The darkness of confusion, worry, disease, doubt, fear, anxiety, stress, and fear. As a Christian coach, you’re not coaching others just so they can find temporary man-made solutions, but true solutions and a godly plan to move forward.

The Bible declares that God is light, and there is no darkness in him at all. (1 John 1:5) The opposite of that is also true meaning that the devil is darkness and in him is no light. Without you and other believers who read the Bible, the devil’s darkness is all that’s left. God gave you His Word so you and other believers can help the people you work with to move from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God. (Acts 26:18) As a Christian coach you have an ability to bring light into the coaching conversation and that light is not because you’ve learned the techniques of coaching, but that light happens by way of your purposeful decision that you want to bring the light of God’s truth into your coaching.

  • Psalm 119:105 (NLT) – Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path.

The Bible was written by different men of God, fully inspired by the Holy Spirit, speaking for God. The words of the Bible are light, and that light will change the life of the people you coach by pushing away the darkness that is constantly trying to keep them from becoming better and reaching the best solutions to the issues that you coach them.

  • 2 Peter 1:20-21 (NLT) – Above all, you must realize that no prophecy in Scripture ever came from the prophet’s own understanding, or from human initiative. No, those prophets were moved by the Holy Spirit, and they spoke from God.

God aims first to renew man’s darkened spirit by imparting life to it, because it is this spirit which God originally designed to receive His life and to commune with Him. God’s intent after that is to work out from the spirit to permeate man’s soul and body. ~ Watchman Nee

Infuse God’s Word

Many people read the Bible, but because they don’t reflect on it or pray for understanding, they don’t get much from it. God’s Word can certainly be comforting and supporting, but it’s the infusion of God’s Word into the very fabric of your soul that makes you an effective Christian coach. It’s believing that God says what He means, and He means what He says. It’s faith that God’s Word is alive and powerful and has the ability to cut through all the false teachings of the world, bringing true light and hope to anyone who will take it to heart.

  • Hebrews 4:12-13 (Message) – God means what he says. What he says goes. His powerful Word is sharp as a surgeon’s scalpel, cutting through everything, whether doubt or defense, laying us open to listen and obey. Nothing and no one can resist God’s Word. We can’t get away from it—no matter what.

You’ll never be a truly effective Christian coach without getting the insights that the Holy Spirit wants to give you in each and every coaching conversation. Then too, much of what you’re going to hear from the Holy Spirit will come by way of what you’ve read from the Bible. As you read it and make it your own, the Holy Spirit will bring different truths to your mind and as you think of those verses, they will bring life and light to what you have to say.

  • John 14:26 (NLT) – But when the Father sends the Advocate as my representative—that is, the Holy Spirit—he will teach you everything and will remind you of everything I have told you.

God’s Word also brings purpose. There are people you’ll coach that seem to have lost their purpose. They’ve lost their way, struggle with goals, not sure what steps to take, or they’re confused about their life. But, when you’ve infused God’s Word into your coaching, you’re tuned into the Holy Spirit’s language and you have the spiritual ability to bring the light of God’s Word to your remembrance, infusing you to ask the right questions at the right time, said in the right way, so you can help others find or renew their purpose. No matter where anyone is in their life’s journey, it’s always God’s purposes that prevails, and no person can reach their potential without living a purposeful life based on God’s design.

  • Proverbs 19:21 (NIV) – Many are the plans in a person’s heart, but it is the LORD’s purpose that prevails.

As a Christian Coach, quoting the Bible or paraphrasing what it says will help you frame some of the most powerful questions, provide potent direct communication, maintain your Christian presence, build trust, and facilitate learning. As you build your desire to continually grow in your knowledge and utilization of God’s Word in your coaching, it will set you up to have a greater impact on your coaching prowess than anything else you may do. After all, Jesus was the perfect coach, and the Bible doesn’t say that he was always looking for another class to take to improve.

Mental Clarity

Reading and using God’s Word in your life and coaching brings mental clarity. God designed the human brain and how that brain functions. God designed every aspect of how your mind could and should work. You already know that your brain functions very differently from the functioning of animals. That too is God’s design and no matter how many people invent “little green men” from other planets having sway over your DNA or believing in some evolutionary series of events, the truth is that God created human beings in his own image. In the image of God he created them; male and female he created them. (Genesis 1:27) That means that the way your brain functions was established by God from the beginning of time.

The human brain functions best when it’s fed with the right food. For example, a person who gets drunk loses a great deal of brain function. Alcohol is a neurotoxin, damaging the brain cells when too much of it is introduced. What builds and restores brain cells is feeding the brain the right type of physical food and more importantly, the right kind of spiritual food. That spiritual food is God’s Word.

  • 2 Timothy 1:7 (NKJV) – For God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind.

When you make the decision to use God’s Word as a means to help others while you’re coaching, your words now have the potential to push away the darkness that has infiltrated their mind and let’s face it, everyone living on this blue marble has to deal with the devil’s darkness every single day. Your coaching and the introduction of light through your words and faith can bring you and your client, clarity of thought and perceptual acuity. Only God’s Word can provide the spiritual nutrition that the brain needs. Only God’s Word can bring the light that pushes away the darkness of this world.

  • Psalm 119:130 (NKJV) – The entrance of Your words gives light; It gives understanding to the simple.

The Holy Spirit wants to help you to filter through what your clients say in order to get to the heart of the matter. That requires knowing the language of the Holy Spirit which is the Bible. The Holy Spirit will help you hear between the lines, discern what’s really being said, and cut through the smoke screen of your client’s words to get to the heart of the problem. All of your coaching efforts will go better when you’ve learned the language of the Holy Spirit by reading the Bible regularly.

Spiritual Power

God’s Word has spiritual power. Why wouldn’t you want to use the most powerful tool for coaching you could use? Why limit your ability as a Christian coach? Never, never, never diminish the reality that there is spiritual power in the Word of God and when you make the decision to use God’s Word in your coaching along with your ability to listen to the Holy Spirit, you’ll find that your clients will consistently have breakthroughs because you’ve introduced spiritual power to their problems or issues. That’s not because you’re so great… but because God is so great, and He wants you to have the power of the Holy Spirit in your coaching.

  • John 6:63 (NLT) – The Spirit alone gives eternal life. Human effort accomplishes nothing. And the very words I have spoken to you are spirit and life.

Some people won’t immediately gain traction when you’re using your biblical knowledge in the coaching conversation. Why? Because a person without the spirit cannot understand spiritual truth. That doesn’t mean that there won’t be an impact because when you use biblical words and insights, there is always an impact.

  • Hebrews 4:12 (NLT) – For the word of God is alive and powerful. It is sharper than the sharpest two-edged sword, cutting between soul and spirit, between joint and marrow. It exposes our innermost thoughts and desires.

As you regularly read and study the Bible, your outer person doesn’t always change but your inner person changes a lot. The Holy Spirit comes into your life and changes who you are from the inside, eventually manifesting new abilities on the outside.

Develop The Holy Spirit’s Power In Your Coaching

What do you need to do in order to know the Language of the Holy Spirit and use it in your coaching?

  • Psalm 1:1-3 (NLT) – Oh, the joys of those who do not follow the advice of the wicked, or stand around with sinners, or join in with mockers. But they delight in the law of the LORD, meditating on it day and night. They are like trees planted along the riverbank, bearing fruit each season. Their leaves never wither, and they prosper in all they do.

One – Meditate on the word of God.

Don’t just read the Bible but take your time and study it. Think about what God’s Word says and as much as you can, keep thinking about it throughout your day. The worst days of your life are the ones where you’re ready to lay your head down to go to sleep and realize that you didn’t give any time to the contemplation and meditation on God’s Word. Your worst coaching days are when you didn’t find a way to build God’s Word into some part of the coaching conversation or you forgot to listen for the Holy Spirit’s suggestions.

  • Joshua 1:8 (NLT) – Study this Book of Instruction continually. Meditate on it day and night so you will be sure to obey everything written in it. Only then will you prosper and succeed in all you do.

Two – Practice the Word of God.

God didn’t have the Bible written just so you could read it. He wants you to use it. God’s Word is not just for information, but for transformation. It’s about taking the words that have been written and taking action on what you’ve read. Don’t just listen to God’s word. You must do what it says. Otherwise, you are only fooling yourselves. (James 1:22) Matthew 7:24 (NIV) – Therefore everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock

Three – Take Action On God’s Word In Your Coaching.

No sane person can get through life without recognizing that the Bible is God’s Word. It’s time to face reality. There is no possible way for this world, or the people of this world, to exist by accident. There is a Godly design for your life and the life of the people you coach. That design was put in place by the one true God well before you or your client were born. Ignoring God’s design is the epitome of satanic influence and is to be avoided at all costs. Ignoring the Holy Spirits language when you’re coaching is like kicking a ball with your legs tied together. You might make a little progress, but you’re eventually going to fall and not get back up.

  • Matthew 6:33 (NLT) – Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need.

Conclusion

God didn’t create you, a Christian coach, to be led by the world and simply coach with worldly skills. God created you to order your life accordingly to His Word. A mature believer thinks all the time about what God’s Word says and allows the Holy Spirit to bring the power of scripture into the coaching conversation. The Holy Spirit wants to show you the path or the way to coach effectively every single time, but it begins with reading, knowing, and infusing the Bible, God’s Word, into your life so you’ll know and follow the language of the Holy Spirit.

  • Psalm 119:133 (KJV) – Order my steps in thy word: and let not any iniquity have dominion over me.
